    Three-point function of semiclassical states at weak coupling

    We give the derivation of the previously announced analytic expression for the correlation function of three heavy non-BPS operators in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory at weak coupling. The three operators belong to three different su(2) sectors and are dual to three classical strings moving on the sphere. Our computation is based on the reformulation of the problem in terms of the Bethe Ansatz for periodic XXX spin-1/2 chains. In these terms the three operators are described by long-wave-length excitations over the ferromagnetic vacuum, for which the number of the overturned spins is a finite fraction of the length of the chain, and the classical limit is known as the Sutherland limit. Technically our main result is a factorized operator expression for the scalar product of two Bethe states.     The international face of Thessaloniki: the “Greek crisis,” the entrepreneurial mayor, and mainstream media discourses

    Thessaloniki and its mayor have been portrayed quite favourably in international mainstream media compared to the Greek state after the 2008 economic crisis. The dominant (media) discourses on Greece interpret the crisis as the result of the failure of the Greek state to reform due to the prevalence of a traditional political culture over a modern one and the moral failures of the population. In the international media representations of Thessaloniki, the local government has been described as “exceptional” in its crisis management compared to the state and other local governments, and the city's mayor, Yiannis Boutaris, has been portrayed as a reform hero, due to the implemented entrepreneurial development strategy and the revamp of the city's image through place branding. Analysing the key role of international media in the production and reproduction of a place-branding campaign of Thessaloniki in international media by employing critical discourse analysis, the paper questions the favourable representations of the city compared to the Greek state during the same period. I argue that the serial repetition of positive images contributed to Thessaloniki being perceived as an example to be followed by other Greek local governments and the central state, acting as a best practice example for transformations envisioned on wider scales. The paper contributes to place-branding debates by illustrating the important role of international media in the dissemination of place brands, and by analysing how media representations of place may serve the legitimation of processes of neoliberalisation on scales wider than the concrete urban setting where they occur

    Generalized cusp in AdS_4 x CP^3 and more one-loop results from semiclassical strings

    We evaluate the exact one-loop partition function for fundamental strings whose world-surface ends on a cusp at the boundary of AdS_4 and has a "jump" in CP^3. This allows us to extract the stringy prediction for the ABJM generalized cusp anomalous dimension Gamma_{cusp}^{ABJM} (phi,theta) up to NLO in sigma-model perturbation theory. With a similar analysis, we present the exact partition functions for folded closed string solutions moving in the AdS_3 parts of AdS_4 x CP^3 and AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x S^1 backgrounds. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link.Post-Keynesians have delivered an important advance in providing explanations of the Eurozone Crisis, not the least in demonstrating how the formation of the European integration project lacked the means to manage effectively the macroeconomic imbalances between ‘core’ and ‘peripheral’ spaces across the region. Through a critical engagement with such descriptions, this article argues that to account more adequately for the formation of the asymmetrical and crisis-ridden forms of development across the Eurozone, it is necessary to focus on the uneven and combined development of Europe’s ‘peripheral’ spaces and their integration into an expanded free trade regime since the 1980s. It is through a focus on the structuring condition of uneven and combined development shaped by capitalist social relations of production and attendant class struggles that we can better locate the origins of the present crisis

    Contains fulltext : 95738.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)BACKGROUND: Sigma-54 is a central regulator in many pathogenic bacteria and has been linked to a multitude of cellular processes like nitrogen assimilation and important functional traits such as motility, virulence, and biofilm formation. Until now it has remained obscure whether these phenomena and the control by Sigma-54 share an underlying theme. RESULTS: We have uncovered the commonality by performing a range of comparative genome analyses. A) The presence of Sigma-54 and its associated activators was determined for all sequenced prokaryotes. We observed a phylum-dependent distribution that is suggestive of an evolutionary relationship between Sigma-54 and lipopolysaccharide and flagellar biosynthesis. B) All Sigma-54 activators were identified and annotated. The relation with phosphotransfer-mediated signaling (TCS and PTS) and the transport and assimilation of carboxylates and nitrogen containing metabolites was substantiated. C) The function annotations, that were represented within the genomic context of all genes encoding Sigma-54, its activators and its promoters, were analyzed for intra-phylum representation and inter-phylum conservation. Promoters were localized using a straightforward scoring strategy that was formulated to identify similar motifs. We found clear highly-represented and conserved genetic associations with genes that concern the transport and biosynthesis of the metabolic intermediates of exopolysaccharides, flagella, lipids, lipopolysaccharides, lipoproteins and peptidoglycan. CONCLUSION: Our analyses directly implicate Sigma-54 as a central player in the control over the processes that involve the physical interaction of an organism with its environment like in the colonization of a host (virulence) or the formation of biofilm

    Investigation of serum BDNF levels in drug-naive patients with schizophrenia

    The role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is to promote and modulate the neuronal responses across neurotransmitter systems in the brain. Therefore, abnormal BDNF signaling may be associated with the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Decreased BDNF levels in the brain and the serum of patients with psychotic disorders have been reported. In the present study, we assessed serum BDNF levels in a group of 14 drug-naive first-episode patients with schizophrenia (FEP), compared to 15 healthy controls. The serum BDNF levels in the sample of FEP patients was significantly reduced compared to normal controls (23.92 ± 5.99 ng/ml vs. 30.0 ± 8.43 ng/ml, F = 5.01, df = 1, p = .034). Negative correlations were shown between serum BDNF levels of the patients and the PANSS Positive and Negative subscale scores. Our findings indicate that BDNF levels at the onset of schizophrenia may reflect associated pathophysiological processes as well as the severity of positive and negative psychotic symptoms. © 2008 Elsevier Inc.     Association of serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor and duration of untreated psychosis in first-episode patients with schizophrenia

    Background/Aims: The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in serum and the central nervous system are altered in patients with schizophrenia, suggesting that changes in the expression of BDNF might contribute to the disease pathophysiology. Long duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) has been associated with poorer prognosis in patients with schizophrenia. Such a relationship of untreated psychosis to outcome may indicate a neurodegenerative process and may have important implications for understanding the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Methods: In this study, we investigated the association between serum BDNF levels and DUP in a sample of drug-naïve patients in their first episode of schizophrenia (FEP). We investigated serum BDNF levels in a sample of 37 drug-naïve FEP patients and 21 matched healthy subjects. Results: The serum BDNF level in the sample of FEP was significantly reduced compared to the healthy subjects (18.87 ± 8.23 vs. 29.2 ± 7.73 ng/ml, t = 4.76, d.f. = 57, p = 0.01). A negative correlation was found between serum BDNF levels and DUP in the group of patients (r = -0.346, p = 0.036). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that low serum BDNF levels at the onset of schizophrenia were associated with a long DUP and this could reflect an acute neurodegenerative reaction during the untreated phase of psychosis. © 2010 S.     Association of serum BDNF levels with hippocampal volumes in first psychotic episode drug-naive schizophrenic patients

    Evidence suggests that hippocampal volumetric abnormalities are present in first-episode schizophrenia. The hippocampus contains the highest brain levels of neurotrophic factors, which are major determinants of neuronal plasticity. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) influences neuronal survival, differentiation, synaptogenesis, and maintenance and is also correlated with neuronal activation in the hippocampus. BDNF is also involved in the development and modulation of dopaminergic-related systems. Alterations of serum BDNF levels have been shown in a number of studies with first episode patients with schizophrenia, probably reflecting an association between BDNF and the pathogenesis of the disorder.In the present study we investigated the correlation between serum BDNF levels and hippocampal volumes in a sample of first episode drug-naïve patients with schizophrenia (FEP) and healthy control subjects.We found that hippocampal volume (HV) was decreased in FEP patients. Corrected right HV of FEP patients were significantly smaller compared to corrected right HVs of healthy subjects. The serum BDNF levels in the sample of FEP patients was significantly reduced compared to the healthy subjects. A significant positive association was found between serum BDNF and the corrected right HV in the group of patients such that the smaller the HV, the more reduced the serum BDNF levels. (Pearson r = 0.452, p = 0.045). Our findings indicate that low serum BDNF levels are associated with reduction in HV at the onset of schizophrenia and may further support the theory of a neuroprogressive-neurotoxic reaction associated with the onset of psychosis. © 2011 Elsevier B.V
